What feature is shared in common among a pineapple, sea-shell, mountain goat's horn, the Milky Way, and the series of numbers -- 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,...?

Well, let me see... I can eat pineapple, but I can't eat a horn. I can be hurt by a horn and by a pineapple as well, but I can't be hurt by the Milky Way, and, if it's not a chocolate bar, I can't eat it... I can admire the Milky Way... Oh, yes! I can admire the Milky Way and a pineapple, and a goat's horn and a shell as well. These things are all very beautiful! But numbers?

Yes, you are right, these things are very beautiful and the core of their beauty are spirals shapes. Spirals are wonderful creations of Nature and they can be found everywhere - in the sky (spiral Galaxies) and under the water (shells). Many plants and animals display spiral shapes.

Do you know, you can find 21 spirals on the pineapple? Eight of them are right-handed whorls and 13 are left-handed ones. Five right-handed and 8 left-handed whorls can be found in a pine cone, 34 and 55 in the sunflower. And many, many other plants reveal spirals in the screw-twisted position of their leaves and in the florets arrangement. And of course, people can't pass up using these natural shapes in designs and you can find them not only in caracole or helix, but in many wonderful art creations.

Logo gives you a wonderful opportunity to create various spiral shapes on your own. I'll show you just some examples to tease your brain.

Spirals in nature & art         Spirals in Logo

Spirals are not just beautiful shapes. Some of them display deep mathematical concepts and these figures long ago attracted the attention of now famous mathematicians.

Have you ever heard about the spiral, named after Archimedes?
Or about Equiangular spiral , which impressed so the famous Switzerland mathematician Jacob Bernoulli, that he called it "spira mirabilis" and according to his will it was carved on his tomb in Basel?

Also, spirals may appear as specific trajectories. For example, I can mention "Bugs Meeting" problem and a "Chasing" one.

So you see, not just one story, but thousands, can be told about spirals. I hope, we'll find time for some more stories in awhile.
